An old farm, and a bit of shopping in Bakewell

In the morning we went with Aprille to see an old barn and farmhouse that Steve the musician has been renovating, near the village of Hathersage, which is on the Sheffield end of the Peak District. He showed us how the roof slates are hung (on steel pegs instead of the traditional oak ones), and how the inside of the farmhouse renovation was coming. These slate roofs weigh so much they tend to bow the walls out, so there are special ways to prevent that happening.

Just up the road is the famous old climbing area of Stanage Edge, so we went up there and just checked it out. Kind of a treat for me. It is a delightful escarpment of sandstone sticking up from the top of a moor. It goes on and on along the top of the ridge, and it looks like an endless selection of top-ropable climbs. We vowed to come back and climb one day.

On the way home we stopped at the David Mellor Design centre. He was a guy from Sheffield who designed a great deal of cutlery, but also the traffic lights and pedestrian crosswalk controls used in England. There were lots of fun kitchen gadgets to see.

In Bakewell we had lunch in a cafe, did a wee bit of shopping and then headed home. Galen got a book on Ukelele, that came with a CD. When we got home there was a lot of ukelele practice and self-study going on.

Walker's crisps flavour of the day: South African Sweet Chutney. G and W give this one a thumbs down.

More Wimbledon on TV; the boys are getting hooked on tennis.

Aprille made us a pilaf with Thai spices for dinner. Wow, we are really getting fed well here!
